March Madness - WEEK 1: Paper

If you are like me, you are a big fan of sites like craftgawker, pinterest, and designsponge because they are packed with wonderful DIY ideas for all things crafty. Sometimes, however, I "like, pin, or bookmark" way too many things. Too many things to ever get anything made. Great ideas, so little time (hence, my title... Frantic Crafter).

So, I am going to do something about it.

Beginning March 1, I am going to embark upon a month of MARCH MADNESS, crafting style. Week 1, I am going to choose 7 simple projects that are made with paper, and I am going to tackle one each day. I am going to keep these simple, so that I am not causing undue stress with my little project.

Without further ado, here are my selections for Week 1:

Magazine Tree
Paper Quilt
Pillow Box
String-Tie Envelope
Wrapped Pencil
Enveloper Liners
Paper Punch Garland

My goal is to post back here each day with what I have made, but we'll see how that goes. You know... frantic and all.  ;)

Won't you join me? It does not have to be these projects, or even paper projects. Just pick 7 things off that list of crafty "to dos" and tackle 'em. Let me know how it goes!

Blue Park

Just a few pictures of our trip to the "blue park" yesterday. Ali calls it the blue park because of the color of the equipment, but after looking at the sky in these photos, I think the blue park has a double meaning.  :)

SNOW, kinda.

We had an honest to goodness snow storm this morning! The kids were so excited... they moved just as fast as they could and put on all kinds of clothing and ran outside. See the heaps of snow? No? That is because it ended as soon as it started. I am a long-time snow hater, but even I almost felt bad for them.

Completely unrelated... look at these photos of my kid. I pulled out my REAL (non-phone) camera yesterday, and of course Ali was more than happy to pose for me. These 2 photos particularly stuck out for me. So very Ali.  :)

Happy Saturday, all!

DIY Day - Paper Flowers

DIY DAY: Paper Flowers Roundup

I always have so many ideas floating around in my head. The great thing about the internet is that there are so many great ideas floating around out there. The bad thing about the internet is that there are so many great ideas floating around out there.

Sooo... I am going to attempt to corral some of those ideas into my blog for future reference for both myself and whoever else would benefit. Further saturation of the internet with good ideas. Ahh!

First up: a collection of paper flowers. The links to the DIYs are located below the pictures. Enjoy!

Now go forth and make flowers!

Oh, Phil

He may have seen his shadow, but I'm ok with 6 more weeks of winter if it's the kind of winter we have been having so far! Winter without coats? Winter with flowers blooming outside? Sign me up  ;)

Juice box, baby

Ali, my little boot-loving girl, has also become very much a fan of top 40 type music these days. She knows the lyrics to a surprising number of songs, actually. It always amazes me. The other day, we heard the song "I Love Rock 'N Roll" (I think that is the name), and she sang along with her own twist... "I love rock 'n roll, put another dime in the JUICE BOX, baby." I laughed out loud. Try explaining to a 4-year-old what a juke box is. No clue. She could identify a DVD, an ipod, and the logo for netflix, but juke box? Not so much.  :)

In other news, I added a bunch of goodies to my etsy store this week. Click on the link to the right for a peek-a-loo.

New goodies for Etsy

I have been a busy little beaver making some new bowls for my etsy shop. Click on the etsy link to the right if you want to see some more photos.

Also, I finally finished my Endpaper Mitts. I have had this yarn and pattern tagged on Ravelry forEVER. I love them. Of course, James told me they were perfect for when I am standing under a bridge trying to warm up my hands over a steel drum. He's just jealous. ;)

The Mad Hatters

Last year, I started a little knitting group at church. I'd had a few people ask me to teach them to knit, and I figured it would be a fun endeavor. It has been. This autumn, we started a little project of knitting hats to give away to anyone in he community who wanted/needed them.

With the help of some generous knitters and crocheters, we complied 20 hats of various shapes and sizes. Look at this wonderful pile of hand-knit hats!

Last Monday, the Clothes Closet at church was set for its regular evening hours, and I decided to bring the hats over to hand out to folks who might want one.

Do you know that 17 of the 20 hats found a home that night?! I was lucky enough to be there to see several people choose a new hat. One man went home with a new black hat (knit by the lovely Lynn Ayers) and asked me to pass on thanks to the group for doing such a nice thing. I also watched a little boy (probably Ben's age or so), walk away with a new orange hat, smiling from ear to ear.

So, we knitters and crocheters are back at it again. I have 4 new hats waiting for the next round. My hope (and the original plan) is to hang the hats up outside on the fence by the playground, with attached tags inviting members of the community to go ahead and take a hat.

I know some folks are concerned that the hats will go to the "right" people.... people who deserve a handknit hat. People who need a handknit hat. Here is the thing... I have no intent to make sure that the hats go to certain people. That's not what it's about. Will some people take a hat that don't need one? Yep. Will some people take a hat and then never use it again? You bet. Don't care. The hats are there for the taking. God's love, spread through handknits.

So, if you live in Roanoke and need a hat - come on by the church!
If you knit/crochet/sew and want to donate some hats, drop them off or send them to the church, c/o Jennifer Armentrout.
If you don't knit but have some old/unwanted yarn sitting around, we'll gladly take that as well.  :)

Power to the People!

I got a little reminder today about what one squeaky little voice can do.

On Friday, the boys wanted to eat breakfast in school, which they have only done once before. We said fine, but then James and I got our wires crossed and he thought I gave them money even though I had not. Oops! So, when Eric and Ben got off the bus, I asked them what happened when they went to get breakfast. Ben had no problem and was able to type in "his number" and get his beloved waffles. Eric, on the other hand, got through the line, was told he did not have enough money on his account, and had his breakfast taken away from him. Breakfast costs $1.

Needless to say, I was unhappy and called the principal to see why Eric was not allowed to "charge" his breakfast, when I know that kids are allowed to go over their account by a certain amount for lunch. The principal was understanding, but said there is a different rule for breakfast, perhaps because it is not federally mandated the way lunch is. She suggested that I speak with the cafeteria manager to see if we could figure out a plan.

And so I did. I learned that Eric has $.80 in his account. Thus, his breakfast was taken away (and THROWN away, I am sure), and he was sent to class hungry for 20 CENTS!

20 cents.

The cafeteria manager and I discussed the ridiculousness of this rule, and I told her that I would work with her to brainstorm solutions, but that I would not let this drop, even if that meant seeking PTA support, speaking with the school board, whatever.

I got a call from her a couple hours later, and she said she made some calls and learned that in fact they WERE able to "credit" breakfast the same as lunch. Apparently, the rule is that kids can charge up to $10 for lunch and/or breakfast before they are cut off. She assured me that the policy would be changed internally and that kids would no longer be turned away for a low account at breakfast.

Hurray! A great reminder to start the week...  Don't be afraid to speak up.

My New Cowl ... it's more than just the top of a sweater

I finished my BIGGO cowl yesterday, much to my delight. I did not much enjoy the process of knitting it (big needles and yarn hurt me.... give me sock-weight yarn over that any day), but I LOVE the result. It is warm. it is soft, and it doubles as an earwarmer/headband (check out my profile pic). Of course, when I showed it to James (aka Mr. Funny), he asked me when I was going to knit the rest of the sweater. ;)

Happy Birthday, baby girl

4 years ago? Really? Hard to imagine we ever lived without this smile.

And the constant posing. She is now officially the only kid who will gladly pose for pictures for me. (Ben will if he is doing something embarassing, the picture of which will prevent him taking office some day, but that's another story.)

Ali at 4. Well, the NICU nurse who on day 3 of Ali's life said, "Good luck with this one" has proven to be prophetic. She is a wonderful, joyful, loud, wild girl. What else about ali at 4?

Favorite colors: Pink and purple
Favorite character: Hello Kitty
Favorite footwear: Cowboy boots (with "any boots" coming in second)
Favorite game: Playing "kitties" with Ben, or hello Kitty BINGO with Mom
Favorite animal: Butterfly
Favorite tv show: Dora, High School Musical, Shake it up (bad parenting)
Favorite book: Pinkalicious
Favorite food: Brownies, cupcakes, ice cream (sweet tooth, anyone?)
Favorite saying: HI-YAH! (thanks, Miss Piggy)
Pet she wants: "Cute little beautiful puppy"
What she wants to be: Mommy and teacher

Can't wait to see her at 14. Oh wait, maybe I can.  ;)

Air Hockey Hi-YAH!

Behold, the air hockey table. This year for Christmas, we bought the kids (and ourselves - who are we kidding!) an air hockey table on Craig's List.  I am a huge fan of Craig's list.... our current end tables and TV cabinet were bought this way as well. 100 bucks, and now it is in our basement to enjoy. And then, when we grow out of it, back on Craig's List it will go. Love that.

The kids are getting a kick out of playing it, and yesterday I caught Ben and Ali playing their favorite way... with all 4 pucks at once. The fun part is, whenever Ali would hit a puck, she would yell "HI-YAH", Miss Piggy style. She has been practicing her karate screams just about nonstop since seeing The Muppet Movie, and so it only makes sense that her favorite new phrase would make it into air hockey as well.  ;)

Revisiting the Chore Chart

I'm not sure what is is about a new year that brings out the organization beast in me, but the beast is rearing it's head again this year. Instead of buying a dozen plastic bins for sorting (that was last year's New Years organizing project), I decided to make a commitment to this pretty little thing....

THE CHORE CHART!

I made this a couple years ago in an attempt to get more help around the house from the kiddos, and so that we could start to explain money management to the kids. It did work, but we (the grown-ups) slacked off, and things fell apart. This time, Ali is old enough to join the fun, and so we are gonna give this another try. Let me explain how it works, and then I will explain a bit about how I made it.

HOW IT WORKS:
The chart is divided into 3 basic sections (blue for Eric, orange for Ben, pink for Ali). There is a strip of pockets (2 for each kid) across the middle that hold cards of things they must do each day... CHORES. They are expected to always keep up with these chores (things like get dressed, make their beds, clear the table) each day. When they have completed a chore, they move it from the left to right pocket. They get a small allowance each week that remains the same amount, assuming they have basically kept up with chores.

In addition, if their chores are completed for the day, they may choose one or more JOBS, which are also listed on cards (in green type, versus red for chores) and stuck in the grid at the bottom of the chart. Job include things like picking up sticks outside, sweeping the porch, or helping with laundry. If they complete a job, they put that card into a larger pocket below their two chore pockets. At the end of the week, I see what jobs they have done that week, and they get extra money accordingly. Those extra cards are stored in pockets that are across the top of the chart.

Sound confusing? Well, I was worried about that too, but believe me.... the kids caught on RIGHT away, and it worked. They knew that they were expected to do the minimal things that everyone should do around the house, and if they wanted extra cash, they could go above and beyond. Surprisingly, they often did! This time, I think we can make it work, as long as the grownups keep up with it.

We really struggled about how best to handle the allowance and money issue. On one hand, I want my kids to learn that they need to earn money, but at the same time, I want them to understand that there are basic things that need to be done in a household, and that they need to contribute just because, not because they are being paid. Thus, the 2-prong approach. Allowance is small and semi-automatic. If you want more, you need to earn it. Not sure it's the very best approach, but it's the best I can come up with for now.  :)

HOW I MADE IT:

I spent hours (and I mean hours) scouring the internet for a chore chart that made sense to me conceptually, but that also would be pretty enough that I could stand looking at it everyday. My chart is an amalgamation of lots of different things I saw out there.

The base of the chart is a large cork bulletin board that we had in our basement. I cut a piece of off-white duck cloth large enough to cover the whole board and wrap around the back.

Then, I made three strips of pockets of varying heights by measuring out the width I needed, embellishing with the colorful "quilted" strips of fabric, sewing lines to make pockets, and then sewing those pocket strips to the main piece.

When that was done (I will admit it took me almost a whole day!), I wrapped the fabric around the bulletin board and stapled it to the back.

Lastly, I took ribbon and made the grid at the bottom, tacking it down with the push pins.

The cards were made on the computer and have a chore/job listed at the top, a photo in the middle, and a brief description at the bottom. They are covered with clear contact paper so that they will survive over time. I add new chores/jobs periodically.

Well, wish me (and the kids!) luck. I have a whole lot of additional cards to make up.  ;)

Let There Be Light

A new year ... and we begin it with new lights. Lights in ceiling fans, that is. I have hated our old ceiling fans in the den since the day we moved into this house, and not just because half the sockets did not function. They were also very, very ugly (not unlike MOST of the lighting in this house). We have slowly been chipping away at the ugliness and have been buying new lighting fixtures over the last 16 months, but those ceiling fans have been haunting me the most. The trouble is, I could never really find anything I liked to replace them. Ideally, I would like to have more of a multi-pendant fixture kind of thing over the table, but our beams on the ceiling (which I DO like), make that impossible.

So, on a trip to Home Depot the other day, James saw these fans and thought they would be good replacements. I finally gave up my dream of finding that perfect non-ceiling-fan replacement, and we bought these fellas. Truth is, I really like them. Sometimes it is ok to "settle" because you find out you actually like what you thought you didn't. (I'm talking about the lights still, not James.)   ;)
